Frequently Asked Questions
What is Body Balancing and How Does It Work?
Body balancing is about creating equilibrium in the entire body, from head to toe. I assess your body’s imbalances and use a variety of techniques to soften and release muscles and fascia in areas such as the (pregnant) belly, diaphragm, hips, psoas, ribs, back, and more. This along with other techniques forms the basis of a breech balancing session. This external body work is essential in preparing your body for internal work, allowing for a more holistic and effective release of tension.
What do you actually DO when working Internally?
When working internally, I assess the quality of the tissues—are they tight, congested, or free-moving? Upon feeling these areas, your body may also signal the need for release through a sensation of discomfort or pain. You may feel these sensations like throbbing, burning or aching. I gently apply pressure and hold, allowing the tissues to soften naturally. This process may take anywhere from 30 seconds to several minutes. At times, I use movement or pulsation techniques to assist in the release.
How is Your Work Different from Physiotherapy?
Physiotherapists and I both offer unique and valuable perspectives on pelvic health, but our approaches differ. Physiotherapists focus on diagnosis and rehabilitation.
My approach, on the other hand, emphasizes holistic body balancing and releasing, considering the entire body and its interconnected systems. My extensive experience as a Midwife also offers valuable insight into the pelvic and birth space.
If I identify concerns, I refer clients to a Women’s health physiotherapist for further evaluation. Likewise, physiotherapists refer clients to me when my services can better address. Our combined expertise offers a comprehensive approach to women’s health.
Do You Use Tools Like Perineum Measurements?
I do not believe in using tools, such as perineum measurements, to assess pelvic floor function. Birth is a highly dynamic process that involves many factors beyond what can be measured by tools. I do not believe an external tool can fully take into account the many complex factors and changes involved during pregnancy, labour and birth, the individual, their chosen care provider, position of birth etc…..
Instead, I teach a method taught ot me by my mentor Fiona Hallinan, that significantly reduce the risk of tearing and help shorten the pushing stage.
How Does Your Background as a Midwife Influence Your Work?
With over two decades of midwifery experience, I offer a unique and holistic approach to pelvic health and birth preparation. My background allows me to provide more than just physical care—I'm able to guide women through both the emotional and physiological aspects of pregnancy and birth.
I help women reflect on and understand their previous birth outcomes, empowering them to process their experiences and prepare confidently for future births. This combination of birth debriefing, pelvic health, and emotional support enables a deeper connection to their body and birth journey.
